Let me see if you can follow my thoughts. I would like to consider myself a plant person. I have lots of them in my house, but I have to admit that they don’t always thrive or even survive.
Case in point…I have had multiple orchids over the past few years. I buy them and bring them home with beautiful blooms, I water them regularly, I place them in my house in what seems to be the right lighting, and I proudly admire. And then, inevitably, within a few weeks, the flower petals drop off and the plant never blooms again.
My orchids can grow new leaves like gangbusters, but I have never successfully had an orchid produce new blooms in my house.
My most recent orchid addition came home a few months ago from Costco sporting seven or eight lovely white flowers. Once again, I did my best to provide for it, until the blooms promptly fell off.
I was so disappointed. Failure had struck again. I will admit (and Jenny will agree) that I am not known for my out-of-the-box thinking. I tend to see things in black and white, and I will stubbornly continue to try things that haven’t worked before. However, on this occasion, I considered relocating the orchid to a ledge in my shower window. This particular spot is possibly the only location in my house that I hadn’t yet tried for an orchid. Reluctantly, I moved the plant a couple months ago, but I really didn’t have much hope.
I continued to water it regularly, and I saw it every day in the shower with me, but I didn’t realize the subtle changes that were taking place until last week.
Y’all, there are nine (so far!) little flower buds on my orchid! And two of them have opened up already! This little plant is bringing me so much joy right now.
You’re probably thinking…great, Lori, but what does this have to with books or reading or Story Finders?
I’m glad you asked. What if our kids are sometimes like temperamental orchids?
We love them, and we do our very best to provide what seems like the right things. They learn and grow as kids do, but maybe, possibly, they’re just surviving and not thriving. We’re not seeing the beautiful flowers that we hope for.
Perhaps this summer would be a great time to try Story Finders.
Maybe your child is already a voracious reader…we’d love to send them stories with depth, stories that are engaging and beautifully written, stories that will help produce virtuous fruit in your child’s character.
Maybe your child is a reluctant reader. Sure, they can read, they can comprehend, but reading is not their first or fifth or even tenth choice of favorite thing to do. We’d love to send them books that will appeal directly to their interests, books with vivid characters that will feel like friends, books that will leave them wanting to read more.
Maybe Story Finders can be the “shower window” for your child’s reading life, and you’ll see fruits from reading that you haven’t seen before.
This summer would be a great time to try us out! We’ve never done this before, but right now we’re offering three books in our summer boxes each month instead of two. If you’ve been on the fence, now is the perfect time to subscribe and get your first box delivered in June.
What are you waiting for?
